Wairere Boulders

Enjoy an easy stroll between, under and over basalt  boulders on an enchanting and mysterious path along the Wairere River over 24 bridges, ramps and stairs to a viewing platform overlooking the Wairere Valley. These boulders have been eroded on their surface because of Kauri trees releasing acid which chemically dissolved the crystal hard rock.

Basalt is not known to erode on the surface, but here Mother Nature created a stunning exception. The rocks are surrounded by lush subtropical rainforest with a big variety of trees, ferns, mosses and lichen.

Routes can be chosen from 40 minutes to 2 hours.

An “animal find” will keep your kids and adults interested during the visit.

Wairere Boulders are open every day during daylight hours.

There are no Eftpos of credit card facilities, so bring along cash or cheque.
