Dargaville Museum

With magnificent views over Dargaville and the historic Northern Wairoa River, this Museum tells the stories of the Kauri Coast through outstanding displays that will interest the whole family. The Dargaville Museum is located in Harding Park with panoramic views of our two maunga (mountains) and the Northern Wairoa River.

Harding Park is also home to a Tractor and Vintage Machinery Museum, the historic Po Tu Te Rangi Pa site and a replica gum diggers camp. Telling the stories of the Kauri Coast, the Dargaville Museum has absorbing displays of shipwreck relics recovered from our wild coastline. In the collection are exhibits which range from a unique hand adzed Maori Waka (canoe) to the masts of the ill-fated Greenpeace ship Rainbow Warrior.

Our Pioneering history gives a fascinating insight into the life of the Croatian gum diggers complete with lifelike models and operational gum washing machine.

Extensive displays in our Collections Hall range from birds’ eggs to boomerangs and transport models to thimbles from around the world.

The fully restored Aratapu Library built in 1874, houses the musical story of the district, the focal point being the extensive Kevin Friedrich collection of piano accordions.

Definitely a ‘must see’ attraction
